Lichens are a slow-growing plant species that can often be seen growing on walls, rooftops and concrete surfaces, with no roots to take up water and nutrients. Instead, they simply absorb moisture from the air. They are categorised as being crusty (crustose), leafy (foliose) and shrubby (fructicose). Of note, this is an image of 'golden shield lichen'.
