People often use a small grade of chicken wire to cover their chimney pots in this way, although a variety of inexpensive pre-made metal grille covers are available, being designed specifically for this purpose. The advantage with using a metal grille is that they are easy to fit and won't come undone, and most importantly, they don't look as unsightly as chicken wire does.
