A barrier of stones placed at the bottom of a cliff or in front of a sand dune will help prevent coastal erosion when the tide flows in and out. They are commonly used along stretches of coastline where ongoing erosion is causing a problem, although often not on sandy beaches used by holidaymakers in tourist hotspots.
