This large North American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) was introduced to the rivers of Europe during the 1960s, when it started to destroy native species, since it is larger, far more aggressive and also a carrier of a devastating plague disease. These North American crayfish or crawfish are therefore often caught in large numbers and eaten, in an attempt to control their inevitable invasion of rivers.
