Woodpeckers have pecked at the sides of the entrance hole, to make it larger and allow them to enter the box. Many nesting boxes claim to be woodpecker proof, since they have metal rings fixed around the entrance hole. However, woodpeckers often simply choose to peck through the sides instead, to reach the chicks inside.
