The entrance hole to this particular nest box has been enlarged by hungry woodpeckers looking for an easy meal. Many woodpeckers act as predators for young chicks and if they are able to gain entry to a box of baby blue tits, the nest will soon be devastated. Therefore, it is often sensible to cover the front and sides with metal plates, or to staple a jacket of small chicken wire to the exterior.
