This picture shows an African penguin, one of four species to be found in the banded penguin genus Spheniscus. The pink patch of skin above its eyes is a gland used to stop the bird overheating in the southern African sunshine. Blood is pumped to the glands to be cooled by the surrounding air when the penguin gets hot.
