Common pheasants are simple to sex, with hens appearing brown and very camouflaged, and cock birds boasting brighter colours and patterns, with a red face / wattle, a bottle-green coloured head and a prominent white collar. The male's plumage is a much darker, richer brown with bands of paler markings, while its tail is longer and streaked.
