When houses are extended, it is normal to move any drainpipes to the side, where they won't look unsightly, with guttering being slightly angled towards them, following the line of the roof. However, it was decided to leave this particular drainpipe in place for two reasons. Firstly, it was cheaper to do so, and secondly, it was hoped that it would disguise the place where the old and new bricks join up.
