The Apple Watch utilises many of the features on an iPhone and in order for it to work properly, it does need to first be paired with the phone (version 5 or higher). The watch then needs to be within reasonable proximity to the iPhone, to receive and make phone calls and text messages, and to allow the apps to work in their entirety.
