High hedging problems are often caused by Leyland cypress trees, since they grow extremely quickly if not pruned back at least once a year. Leylandii trees cannot be pruned back to bare branches, as they won't bud back, and so they can only be trimmed back to foliage, otherwise the branch itself will die and leave a gap in the hedge.
