Pruning a tree in the winter is made much easier, without a canopy of leaves obscuring the branches and hiding the actual structure. However, some trees, such as those belonging to the prunus family (cherries and plums) are best pruned at the beginning of summer, to prevent silver leaf disease entering the wounds.
