A thick layer of gravel provides both an attractive and useful mulch, helping to prevent the growth of unwanted weeds, and also being used to retain moisture and therefore reduce the need for watering. The gravel is mounded up around the individual tufa rocks to create naturalistic hills and a mountain scene in miniature.
