This picture was taken in late spring, when the azalea shrubs were just opening their flower buds and the Japanese maples had fresh foliage. The brightly coloured pink flowers of the azaleas and the leaves of the maples look especially beautiful by the pond, as their colours are reflected in the surface of the calm water. Both rhododendrons and acers will happily grow in dappled shade and so are often seen growing in a woodland setting.
