Buxus is a popular species for small 'shohin' bonsai, since it is relatively slow growing, with compact growth and tiny leaves. Box trees respond well to being pruned, light or hard, often exhibiting mature, fissured, craggy bark. However, it should be noted that this is a half-hardy species and so winter protection may be required during frosty weather.
