Bridges are a common feature in Japanese gardens, often being painted in black and vermilion red. More subtle curved granite bridges are equally popular where the stream is small, or simply 'suggested' by rows of pebbles or purple slate paddlestones (a dry river bed), overlapping to create the illusion of flowing water.
