Japanese maples are often thought to require fairly specific conditions to grow well, namely medium shade and protection against any wind. However, as long as the acer trees are growing strongly, they will grow very happily in full sunshine and relatively exposed conditions. Purple maples certainly colour up best out of the shade, with improved autumn colours when grown in sunny parts of the garden.
