Decking should only be painted after first being thoroughly cleaned, using either a wire brush to scrub the lengths of timber, or a power washer to clean the wood with jets of high-pressure water. Before painting the deck, ensure that it has been brushed and is completely dry, choosing a hot, sunny day so that the paint or woodstain dries quickly, therefore allowing enough time for a second coat if required.
