When a featheredge fence is erected by a professional handyman, you can be sure that it has a long life ahead of it, certainly upwards of 25 years where thick fence posts have been used. By adding a length of gravelboard / weatherboard along the bottom, you can stop the base of the wood from becoming damp and possibly rotting over the years, improving the longevity further.
