Photo showing a recently pruned copped beech hedge (Latin: Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea' / Atropurpurea). The hedge had been allowed to become overgrown and too large, and so it was pruned hard to regain its shape. It is just beginning to produce secondary summer growth. The block pathway, red-brick pathway (basketweave pattern) leads to a brick wall / gateway and into another part of the garden, offering tantalising glimpses of what awaits on the other side of the archway.
