The regular pruning of evergreen conifer hedges in important to prevent the possibility of any neighbourly disputes. However, annual trimming is also necessary to keep the growth compact and the high hedge in shape, as Leylandiis cannot be pruned back to wood - they will not reshoot. Therefore, they should only be pruned back to green shoots, with the top being trimmed harder than the sides, to push the strength and growth back downwards.
