Hostas grow well in shady positions, provided that they are planted in well-drained moist soil that won't dry out. However, if you have slugs in your garden, they will undoubtedly head straight for the lush leaves, unless you take preventative measures, such as slug pellets, beer traps or copper fence boundaries.
