As many Japanese gardens are small in their size and compact in their nature, they don't really have the room for large water features, such as a stream or koi carp pond. Therefore, slate paddlestones and pebbles can be used to suggest water in this way, being made all the more 'realistic' with the addition of a small curved granite bridge or similar.
