Cordyline australis trees are a common sight within seaside towns, since they respond well to the milder weather and are quite happy to tolerate any salt-laden breeze blowing inland off the sea. However, cordylines, as with most palm trees, do prefer a free-draining, gritty soil, so that their roots don't sit in water and rot during the wet winter months.
