When a tree trunk is cut in half, its age is immediately revealed by the number of rings present in the cross-section, each of which represents a year or 'growing season'. The wider they are, the quicker the tree has grown, indicating a warm and wet summer season. However, narrow rings generally indicate little in the way of growth, perhaps a year with a summer drought.
