When cutting down trees for use as firewood, it is recommended that they are felled when they are completely dormant in the winter, so that the amount of sap present within the wood is at a minimum. In the spring, the sap begins to rise and the moisture content in the wood rapidly increases, reducing only slightly in the summer and fall / autumn.
