By slicing cross-sections of a tree trunk and counting each of the concentric rings, you can precisely determine the age of the tree, as well as learning how well it grew year by year. Narrow rings generally mean a slow, dry year with little in the way of rain, while wider rings indicate wet and warm growing seasons.
