This particular ash tree is fortunate to be growing on its own, rather than in a woodland, with all-round light and plenty of space, allowing it to spread its branches. Ash trees (fraxinus excelsior) can grow into enormous specimens, although the species is currently under threat by a disease that is starting to spread through the woodlands of Europe.
