Sweet chestnuts are grown for their abundance of edible seeds / nuts, although young trees can take as long as 20 years until they start to bear fruit. The nuts are protected in a green outer casing that is covered with prickles, being either eaten raw or roasted as in the famous Christmas carol: 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...'
