While sweet chestnuts grow into attractively shaped trees, they are usually planted for their edible nuts / seeds, which start to form on the tree when it reaches 20 years old (or more). Chestnuts are protected in a prickly green casing and when ripe, they can be eaten straight away or dried, ready for roasting in the winter months.
