The top of this particular sweet chestnut snapped off during a severe storm many years ago, along with some of its oldest branches, and so the tree was carefully pruned back to retain an attractive shape. The branches therefore appear a little thin and out of proportion when compared to the giant trunk, although they are starting to grow more vigorously now that the tree is fully recovered.
