Japanese maples prefer free-draining, ericaceous soil and so will grow extremely well in pots, where these soil conditions are easy to achieve by using a combination of specialist acid compost and potting grit. Most acers happily grow in full sunshine and require lots of water during the hot summer months, to prevent their leaves from becoming crispy and scorched if the soil dries out.
