Sequoias are described as being 'monoecious' plants. This simply means that they are able to pollinate themselves, producing their own pollen and also their own seed cones. Redwood pollination takes place in the latter winter months, with the cones taking up to nine months to grow, ripen and release theirs seeds. This self-pollination process has been taking place for many millions of years, with fossils of this sequoia species being discovered from the Jurassic period onwards.
