Yew trees are an extremely poisonous species, with every part of the tree being toxic. However, the flesh of the seasonal red berries is the exception to this and is often eaten by hungry birds in the winter months. Various different varieties of yew have been cultivated over the years, all of which respond well to being pruned and are often used to create topiary shapes in formal gardens.
