Although yews are only considered to be a medium-sized tree, reaching heights of around 20 metres or thereabouts, the world's oldest specimens are known to be more than 1,000 years old. The evergreen needles are short and the growth is compact, while the trunks are fairly smooth and a reddish-brown in colour.
