White onions belong to the allium family, along with their cousins - leeks, garlic and chives. The size and flavour of white onions depends upon the variety and the amount of water that was available during their growing season. They are most commonly chopped and fried, being served with sausages or burgers, as well as being used as ingredients for casseroles, pasta sauces, pies and quiches, amongst other dishes.
